The Pokémon Go Twitter account is going teaser-happy this morning, and it looks like it has a good reason to be: PvP battles are coming to Pokémon Go.
Starting at 8 a.m. ET, mysterious tweets have hinted at something exclamation point-worthy — and the latest of these suggests that the big news is multiplayer battles. The most recent tweet (at original time of publish) includes only an image of a female Pokémon Go trainer standing on a standard Pokémon battlefield. There’s an empty mound for, presumably, our own player character to face off against the other trainer in a Pokémon battle.
PvP is one of those traditional Pokémon features that players have wanted since day one. Pokémon Go developer Niantic has promised that it’s working on this and other multiplayer modes for the game, and it has made good on this promise several times over since launch. First we got gym battles that players can participate in together (even if they’re not much like the gym battles we know from the Pokémon RPGs); this year, we finally got trading.
PvP remains the most obvious holdout. We don’t know how soon battling other players is coming to Pokémon Go, just that it will be soon. And for many of us, that’s enough.
Update: The 11 a.m. tweet in the hourly lineup confirms that trainer battles are “coming soon,” although it has no further details.
